The Biggest Loser Interviewby Pattye Grippo

This is an interview with Sunny Sinclair on November 30, 2011 about the show The Biggest Loser.

Sunny Sinclair

Question:
How hard is that for you to keep your schedule up every day? And do you plan to continue to do that after the finale?

Sunny Sinclair:
It is tough to get up, especially when it's still dark outside and it's cold, and luckily I have my husband there to kick me out of bed. It's not easy you know, fitting it all in and working fulltime and taking care of family and home, but it's definitely worth it. And I probably won't do the same routine per se after the finale, just because it's so intense right now. But I'll definitely get in you know, at least one of those activities every day. So it makes you feel so much better and you feel like you've accomplished so much before the day is even begun. And so, I'll definitely continue at least part of it after the finale.

Question:
We got a chance to really see your sense of humor come out. Can you tell us what made your favorite blooper from this season? Was there a funny story that happened that maybe we didn't get to see?

Sunny Sinclair:
At the weigh ins every week, we would have like a secret word or phrase that we would just throw out there on the scale, and so I think you saw some of them. The silent dance party was one of them, and then we would have different ones like for the Halloween episode we all had to say full moon, which I think they got a couple of them on there and that was always fun.

I know that after the carrier weight challenge, I was in the middle of my interview and a I ate a fly. I ate the fly, and I know they got that on camera, so I don't know if that'll ever come up, but that was kind of crazy. Most of the off camera moments, you know getting silly and laughing, were just going through the same thing every day where we would just get tickled over like, ???Okay. Here we go. we're heading out again.??? And just silliness of kind of getting a little stir crazy, you know there at the ranch.

We all got to know each other so well that we just had a good time. Especially when the cameras were off and we just felt like you know, we can just say whatever. So we had a good time.

Question:
It's a game with competitors, but it seemed from even back in Week 2 when you said John was mean to you, that he always wanted you gone. Can you take us through your relationship and were you a threat from the beginning to him?

Sunny Sinclair:
It's a funny thing, because I always felt like I got along so well with everyone, and I'm pretty non-confrontational. So I don't really know where it began and what exactly the reason was that John didn't necessarily take a liking to me. I know that I think once I called him out on the comments that he made to Anton about me that pretty much from that day forward he was not very happy with me. John kept to himself a lot, and so he just kind of did his own thing. I don't know exactly where the animosity came from, but he's worked hard and he's done well so I commend him on that.

Question:
You must be an inspiration to your students. What do they think of all this Biggest Loser stuff and how important is it for a teacher to be an example in these times when childhood obesity is such a growing problem?

Sunny Sinclair:
My students are thrilled for me, and ever Wednesday morning when they come in after the show they are just tickled and so excited to talk about it. And at first I thought, ???Well, should I take class time to talk about the Biggest Loser???? But I realized that it's a once in a lifetime experience and I gained so many life lessons while I was there that I could share with the kids too. We take a few minutes on Wednesday mornings just to answer any questions that they had. And they're so excited about it and they were just thrilled to be on TV last night.

I definitely think it's important for me to be a good healthy role model for the kids, which I haven't been since I've been teaching. You know 16 years ago when I started teaching I was overweight. And so it's nice to be able to be that kind of example of living right and making good choices. It crosses over into many areas of your life. Just always doing your best and working hard and taking good care of yourself. And so it's been nice to be able to share those life lessons that I learned out there at the ranch with the kids here.

Question:
What do you think about Anna's decision to leave the show?

Sunny Sinclair:
I don't know you know how it all came about, but I will tell you first hand working with her - I love that girl. She is one of those what you see is what you get, and she doesn't play games, and she's just a good person. I know that when she came on the show, her intentions on that show were to help people, and that's exactly what she did with me. And I appreciate her so much and how hard she worked for me. And she really is just a down to earth person. She's not pretentious, and she's just a really good girl.

And I learned a lot from her that I take with me to this day and will continue for the rest of my life. There are times when I am going through my daily routine and I'm having struggles and I think about her words and they help me. I've heard different reports from unnamed sources, but I'll tell you that from my perspective, she was an awesome trainer and an even better person.

Question:
Did you see earlier in the season when Bob predicted that John is at risk for gaining all his weight back, and I wonder what you thought about that? And then who do you think is going to win?

Sunny Sinclair:
I did see that, and you know I'm not into predicting who's going to keep the weight off or gain it back. This is such a personal process for each of us, and I just wouldn't even dare say who I think is going to you know keep it off from here on out. I definitely plan to. And I know that this is a complete lifestyle change for me and I couldn't even imagine going back to the weight I once was.

As far as predicting who will win, it's anybody's game. The people who are in the finals are all hard workers and have just put it all out there, and so I commend whoever does win. Because whoever ends up winning definitely deserves it.

Question:
You said that you're excited to include your family in your weight loss journey. Can you talk a little bit about some of the ways that you're doing that?

Sunny Sinclair:
We as a family go on bike rides, which my husband and son used to always go bike riding and I would just stay at home. And so, we go on bike rides and I play tennis quite a bit with my husband. My son, who's a golfer, I'll get out there and walk the course with him. And just being active and just doing daily things, going to the mall or going shopping with them, those are also things that I just didn't do before. I would stay at home almost like a recluse. I just was not living my life. And so to be able to not only get out there and do physical activities, but also social activities with them, it feels great and I'm a completely different person and my husband and son could not be more happy and proud and thrilled for me.

Question:
All three age groups are represented in the final four. What do you think that says about the battle of the ages, structure of this season, and weight loss in general?

Sunny Sinclair:
Age is just a number. And it's really about determination and deciding what you want and going for it. I think that I can speak for everyone who is out there at the ranch, when you're out there you're mindset has to change and it does change. You start to look at yourself differently. You start to realize that, ???You know what? I can do a lot more than I ever gave myself credit for.??? Regardless of the age. And so you can see the accomplishments of every age group and you just realize that you know, it's never too late to turn your life around and improve it, and age truly is just a number.

Question:
Were you surprised that Becky voted you off because you were so close?

Sunny Sinclair:
Becky and I were very close at the ranch and we still are. Becky, and Anton, and Vinny were all part of the Black Team and Bob's team, and I understand her reasoning for going the way that she did. She assumed rightfully so that John would be voting for me, and that Vinny would probably would be voting for me as well.

So I think in her mind she felt like I need to stick with what the majority is doing just to keep things good between her and Anton because I think it was already a done deal regardless of whether or not she had voted. So I don't blame her for her vote. I had a lower percentage, and truly Anton probably deserved it more since he had a higher percentage. So I don't hold it against her for her vote.

Question:
What else did you enjoy about Makeover Week? Did Jeannie give you a lot of great pointers when you returned home? And have you been enjoying that soup?

Sunny Sinclair:
Progresso is a delicious soup. And like I said, I certainly love soup and money. She gave me some great tips about how to select clothes for my body type and she brought out the shopper in me because I love shopping now. My husband doesn't love it quite as much as I do. He wish I'd quit.

But I love going clothes shopping, and when you're out there at the ranch, you're wearing the Biggest Loser T-shirt and those stretchy pants and you don't think about fashion, and then here comes Makeover Week and you're like, ???Okay. I think I like fashion now that I've got a new body.??? So yes, definitely getting into fashion and seeing myself in a different way, and a more feminine way was exciting and fun. Makeover Week also just to get to see your family was as big of a prize for me as anything else on Makeover Week, so it was nice to see my husband.

Question:
I wanted to learn more about your trip home with Bob. From what we got to see it seemed like it went well and you had amazing weight loss that week. Can you take us kind of behind the scenes on what that trip with him was like?

Sunny Sinclair:
The trip with Bob was amazing. To be able to not only go home and see my family, but introduce them to Bob and let him meet them as well, but to see what it's going to be like whenever I get home in this environment, it was priceless to see the support that I got from my family was just amazing. And I knew what I was coming back into whenever I got off the show. So I knew that I was in good hands once I came back.

But as far as spending that time with Bob here in Texas in my home with my family, I mean they would adopt him if they could, because they love Bob Harper. And it was kind of surreal to look up and he's sitting in my living room. I'm like, ???I have Bob Harper in my living room sitting on a chair. I cant believe it.??? And of course, the rest of my family, they were a little bit like stalkers. They were looking over the railing of the stairs, just watching him. And I'd have to tell them, ???Okay. You all quit looking at Bob. You all got to quite staring.???

But anyways, it was fun and it was surreal. And I run into people at the gym daily who say, ???You know I was up at the gym when you were working out with Bob. That was awesome.??? And it was good to have him there in that gym where the last time I went I was just humiliated. And to go there with him and him say, ???Who cares what anyone says or thinks. You walk in here like you own this gym,??? and it really resonated with me. And now when I go to the gym, I you know hold my head up and I'm proud of myself, and I think back on that time that he spent there at the gym. And it was an amazing week.

Question:
Did the last five contestants prepare for the marathon at the ranch? And what have you been doing at home to get ready?

Sunny Sinclair:
At the ranch we have a mile course that goes around the perimeter of the ranch there and it's called the Presidential Mile. And so I can't even tell you the number of miles we've walked and run on the Presidential Mile getting ready for the marathon throughout the season. So we did the Presidential Mile just continuously, and of course, work on the treadmill. And here at home, I've got a track that I run on around my neighborhood and also up at the gym running on the treadmill. So I've definitely put in a lot of time running and getting ready for that marathon, and I look forward to seeing it next week on TV.

Question:
So we got to see a little bit about your crazy schedule. How do you destress at the end of the day? Do you ever reward yourself for all your hard work?

Sunny Sinclair:
It's not all just work and no fun. My family and I have caught a couple of movies here and there, and there are days when your body just says, ???You've got to stop. You got to take a break for a day.??? And so there have been days when I've just slept in and I haven't gone to the boot camp, or I've taken a break from workout sessions with my trainer just to let my body rest and relax.

But you know when you enjoy getting out there and exercising and you feel good and you feel strong, and it's so much easier than it used to be, it isn't as hard as you would think, because you're enjoying it. And especially playing tennis. It's not even like I'm working out. I definitely take breaks when I need to, but I also enjoy it so much, which is such a blessing and it's exciting to think about living the rest of my life and being physically active and enjoying it.

Question:
Do you have a go-to healthy meal and snack?

Sunny Sinclair:
One of the snacks that I have that the rest of the contestants used to tease me about was I take these little bran crackers, and really they taste a little bit like plywood, but I would do spray butter on them and then do Truvia, it's like a natural sugar, and some cinnamon. So it's kind of like my Biggest Loser cinnamon toast.

Everyone on the ranch was like, ???Sunny, you know that isn't really cinnamon toast. You're not fooling anyone.??? And I would eat those things at every meal and they would just laugh at me. And the other day I was talking with Becky and I said, ???What are you doing???? She said, ???Well, you'd be proud of me. I'm having one of your baked cinnamon toasts.??? So that's kind of a snack that's very filling and I put enough Truvia on there to just take away the plywood taste.

s far as meals, the go-to meal. Eggs. I love eggs. I can eat it at any meal. And of course, fish is easy and quick and extremely low calorie/protein. And so I would say those two are probably my meals that I go to when I need something that's low cal and healthy.

Question:
You mentioned loving to go shopping now. What specifically are you excited to wear now? And are there certain assets that you are enjoying highlighting?

Sunny Sinclair:
Absolutely. I love wearing a cute pair of jeans and some wedges that are a little higher heel. I'm amazed whenever I go try on clothes and I put in a medium shirt and it's a little too big. Girls love to shop, and so it's nice to be able to go out and shop at any place I want to shop and find things that fit me and just get it off the rack and I don't even have to try it on.

It's such a huge difference from when I used to shop in the men's department for shirts, and to go from that to shopping anywhere I want, oh my gosh! It's just the best feeling in the world. And I know it seems kind of trivial, you know your health and you know having this healthy lifestyle is so important just to live longer and you know a healthier life, but buying clothes is also a real good thing. I love it. Of course, my husband's like, ???What'd you buy today????

Question:
Is there a difference when you are looking in the mirror now?

Sunny Sinclair:
The funny thing is when I see pictures of myself from before the ranch, I cannot hardly believe it. I look at that person and I just think, ???I was in complete denial.??? Because I can remember, ???Well, I don't look too bad.??? I mean, I knew I was really, really overweight, but I kind of talked myself into thinking that I didn't look too bad and I looked horrible.

And I look back on it and I cannot believe that I had convinced myself that, ???Okay, well it's not too bad.??? I knew I was in horrible shape and I knew I was morbidly obese, but when you're that overweight, you kind of live a little bit in denial and you don't want to really know how bad you look. You know how bad you feel, to look back on pictures.

And that's one thing when you're really overweight, you don't like to see pictures of yourself, because then you really see what you look like and that's tough. And so now to be able to look in the mirror, I'm a totally different person, and it's funny because I can see the person that I used to be before I gained the weight, and I almost feel like that I was never that overweight person. I feel like I've just been on hiatus for 16 years and now I'm back. And so it feels good to have lost the weight and be that person again, where I'm thin and healthy and I look good, and I feel good about myself.

Question:
Have you been back to Rudy's? And if so, what did you order?

Sunny Sinclair:
I have not been back to Rudy's I have to say, but it's a great restaurant. And if I did, I would get the turkey because Bob said I could have the turkey there. So I think regardless of where you go out to eat, I mean unless it's just those places. But most restaurants have a healthy option, and you just have to be willing to choose the healthier option. So I could even go to Rudy's if I wanted to. I haven't, but I'm sure I will some day.

Question:
What was your family's reaction behind the scenes to what Bob said in the restaurant about, ???I don't think she's coming back here any time soon????

Sunny Sinclair:
It's funny because as hard core as Bob is, my family, especially my sisters are like ten times that. So anything he said they're like, ???Sunny, he's right. You will not be going back to Rudy's. You listen to what he says. Whatever he says to do, you do it.??? Training with Bob , he's extremely competitive and like over the top, obsessed with, ???Okay, you got to do this.??? He's very intense. And I come from an extremely intense family myself, so I felt right at home. I said, ???Bob Harper, I get you. I grew up with you, so I know exactly what you're all about.???

My family is extremely competitive, so when he's telling me this, my mother was like, ???Oh, I feel bad.??? She felt kind of bad for me, because mothers feel like they need to feed their children even if they are morbidly obese and on the Biggest Loser. But as far as my sisters and my dad, they're like, ???He's right. You do not touch that. Get that out of your hands.??? So you know, they're the kind that will slap it out of my hand. So yes, they love Bob.
