The Biggest Loser Interviewby Pattye Grippo

This is an interview with Vincent Hickerson and Becky Comet on December 7, 2011 about the show The Biggest Loser.

Becky Comet

Question:
Last night a big emotional moment was you watching your family kind of talk about the abuse that went on during your childhood. And I'm wondering if that you know scene playing out on TV was kind of a gateway to more discussion. Maybe you can talk about the aftermath of that and if your family has talked more about that situation?

Vincent Hickerson:
We have definitely talked more about it. I've been you know working out with my brother. Walking with my brother and sister both you know any time we can. But me and my mom's relationship has gotten better than ever. We're having a Christmas dinner on December 17 that I'm looking forward to. And you know it's definitely getting better. It's not all fixed yet. You know my mom definitely you know she dealt with it hard because you know it's something she had continually not faced in her life. But I think it was good for her to face it too. And I think it's helping make her life better as well as mine and my brother and sister.

Question:
Can you talk about the role that Carter Hayes has played in your life since you've been on the ranch. And what he means to you?

Vincent Hickerson:
You know Carter has trained a lot of the biggest losers in the past and obviously Hanna)from last season being the most you know amazing change that he's probably been a part of and how great he helped her to get down to 128lbs. I mean he's so smart and he knows exactly how to work you. It's like having one of the trainers from Biggest Loser, Bob or Dolvett, at your house with you all the time.

And it's you know it's definitely awesome. I mean he's helped continue my weight loss like I had at the ranch. You know he cares about me. He only wants to see me get better. You know he's an amazing person. I actually look at him as a person who has helped save lives as well. And you know he gives me a great workout. He don't take it easy on me. You know he knows when to push and he knows when to motivate as well. He has a little bit of Bob and a little Dolvett both in him I think.

Question:
Becky, what was the experience of finishing the marathonlike especially arm in arm with Antone?

Becky Comet:
It was amazing. I mean just finishing a marathon is an amazing feeling. But Antone and I ran the whole thing the whole way together. We've become great, great friends. And just to be able to finish it up with him and to finish at the same time. It was a very special moment.

Question:
Vinny, Dr. Huizenga unfortunately pulled you out of the marathon. What was that moment like? And do you have any plans to go ahead and finish one?

Vincent Hickerson:
I definitely want to finish one, only one. I don't have fun running a marathon. That's not something that I enjoy. I like lifting weights. And that's kind of where you know I like the whole cross fit kind of thing and all that is kind of where my mind has went to since this. But I do want to finish one just for my mind. Dr. Huizenga pulled me because it was the best medical thing for me.

They couldn't probably show my real reaction because I was pretty mad. You know I was upset because I wanted to finish. I made it 20 miles and only 6.2 more miles is. You know I mean I wanted to be able to go and do that. But you know I was proud of accomplishing 20 miles. And for him to pull me and say, ???look you know we don't want you get work any further. We don't want you have a you know a long term injury.??? And you know he is Dr. Huizenga for a reason. You know he's the smartest man probably that we've met. Or that I've ever met. And you know I have to listen to him and respect his decision. But I mean definitely want to get back and finish one somewhere with Becky hand in hand.

Becky Comet:
You bet.

Question:
What is your next goal? What is it you're looking forward to doing now or aiming to do in the future?

Becky Comet:
I'm looking forward to just living a healthy lifestyle with my husband. We're getting ready for the finale, it's just been a lot of work. But I mean you know just routine kind of workouts. And we want to get where we just do things that we like to do that are active and healthy. We have bicycles. We're going to ride bicycles together. He plays racket ball. And he's going to teach me how to play racket ball. And so we just want to be active and healthy and do something together.

Vincent Hickerson:
My dream seems to be never ending. Everybody always kind of says ???Vinny you dream too big.??? But I don't ever stop thinking about you know I want to reach the next rung of the ladder. And I always say I'm always happy, but I'm never content. I want to be in movies. I want to have a number one hit song on the radio. You know I want to inspire people you know about going out and talking and doing speaking engagements. And letting them know that they can do it too. I mean you know there's really all that. But my number one focus is obviously in the near future to get married to Laurie. We don't know the exact date but we're thinking 10/11/12. And then, you know I want to start having some kids. I want a son to you know to teach how to play football. And you know a little daughter to you know basically make sure that nobody ever harms her because I don't know how I handle it. Becky, I'll have to get some tips from you.

Becky Comet:
I'll be ready.

Question:
Do you think that we'll be seeing any of the Biggest Loser contestants at your wedding? Did you make any really good friends in the ranch?

Vincent Hickerson:
I made great friends. Everybody there you know became a friend of mine. I really loved everybody that I got to take this journey with. You know there might be a couple of people you know that I'd like, Becky and Antone and Ramon. You know I came really close to Ramon obviously you know all the way through because we were teammates from the beginning and then Becky and Antone being my teammates to the very end. They helped so much every day. They would probably have special places in the wedding for sure. But everybody would be invited and you know it would be an amazing thing, so all of these people that I met at the ranch have become lifelong friends for much longer than I have now.

Question:
Did you feel that you utilized your time home well and was able to juggle your everyday life? And incorporating eating healthy and working out?

Becky Comet:
I really do think that I utilized my time at home very well. I did go back to work and showed you know that's just what I needed to do. I felt a responsibility to my school and my students. But along with that I really felt like if I was going to stand on that stage and say, ???I'm a working mom if I can do this, you can.??? I really need to be a working mom when I lost weight when I went through the process. And so I am looking forward to standing on the stage and being able to say that.

And say, ???you know, there's always time for what you want to make time for.??? And it was difficult. I'm going to be the first to tell you it was difficult to work in all the workouts and all the workout time that I've done between the time that I got home and now. But, it was so worth it for me to realize that I really could do that because before that was my excuse. ???Oh, I don't have time. I don't have time. It's just not going to work because I don't have time.??? And I kind of blew that excuse out of the water now.

The eating right part, the nutrition, it was great. I learned so much good nutrition on the ranch and was able to bring that home. When I came home, my husband had already lost weight. He had already lost 50 lbs by the time I got home. So, he was on board and ready to go as far as the nutrition part and as far as the exercise too because we did a lot of working out together. He's a coach and he's also a certified trainer so along with the trainer that I worked with, he was kind of my trainer too. So I got kind of a double whammy. So all though it was difficult, it was doable and I made it work. And I used every minute.

Vincent Hickerson:
My job and what I do as being a performer and an entertainer and a song writer, so my money kind of comes in from those avenue. I have kind of a residual income that is always there. I wasn't really allowed to go back to work because in my line of work you know you have to be photographed and take pictures and do all that stuff.

So I wasn't really able to go back to doing that. So I haven't got to experience what it's going to be line when I'm on the tour bus, when I am riding around. But I have prepared for that. I've put together some workouts and my trainer Carter has put together some workouts to help me on that as well. And so has Dolvet has helped me put together some workouts for being on the road because obviously he has dealt with entertainers on the road many times in the past. So you know I'm looking forward to giving that a try. My nutrition has been great. You know I've really become a pretty good cook. I've been excited about that because Becky could tell you when I first got to the ranch, I never cooked. But by the end of it, I would cook fish and stuff for everybody.

Becky Comet:
Yes he did.

Vincent Hickerson:
And you know I did that because I wanted to get better. I wanted to get better at cooking and actually learned how to cook fish from Becky just so everybody knows.

Becky Comet:
Well thank you, Vinny.

Question:
Do you think what you learned at the ranch was enough training for you to lose the weight at home on your own?

Becky Comet:
Absolutely. I look back at the experience of the ranch and I'm amazed at the things that I learned. The learning curve was definitely straight up. So much about nutrition and we learned to eat healthy. Fresh fruits and vegetables and lean meats and you know fish and chicken and learned different ways to cook them and experimented a lot with different ways to cook. There's a lot of experimenting going on let me tell you.

But and then you know just workout wise, learned so much from the trainers. Anna always preached about you know we need to do thing that you can do at home she preached keep it simple. Well keep it simple, stupid. She preached the KISS method. And keep it simple and make it things that you can do at home. And that you can do in a gym or at home or in a hotel room or wherever you need to be. And Bob's kind of the same way. A lot of circuit training is just keep moving. It was a great experience and I think I acquired all the tools that I needed to do what I do at home.

Vincent Hickerson:
For me just so you all know, Anna never taught me to kiss, but I do believe in the keep it simple method. I definitely learned so much there. You know for me know my trainer is definitely teaching me new things all the time. But even if I just had you know somebody there just motivating me continuously with me, you know that's really all I would really need a trainer for now because I did learn so much at the ranch.

They tell us everything in every scenario. You know we did a workout with San Tibo that we just used towels. And we were doing crunches and sit ups and pulling each and doing all kinds of things. You know we did workouts for Dolvett that required nothing but a piece of floor. You know we did workouts with Bob when we went hiking. You know so if you're out, you don't have a gym, you don't even have the roof over your head, you can still learn how to do those things. You know so we definitely learned enough you know there. We could you know probably training people ourselves you know.

Becky Comet:
Probably so.

Question:
From the things that you both have learned at the ranch, do you have what it takes to win the at-home prize and why?

Becky Comet:
I think Vinny will agree with me on this. I think we definitely learned everything we need to learn. And I think we're both just laser focused on winning that at-home prize. I don't think that that's a question. I know I can do it. I know Vinny is right on my heels. Or I'm on his heels. I'm not too sure which. We haven't seen each other so. But I think we're ready to go.

Vincent Hickerson:
Yes. I know that I've been working my hardest. And for me the ultimate prize is the health that I've gained. The way I feel about myself and my body. And the way I look in my clothes. And I know Becky is the same way. You could tell by the little leopard skin dress that she has on. But yes, I think we're both very strong contenders to win it. You know we made it all the way to the end.

But you know just because you made it all the way to the end doesn't always mean you lost the most percentage. You know you just have those good weeks and bad weeks. And every now and then a good week you know lands on your teammate sometimes. And then you may have had a bad that week. But you know we were blessed to get to this. And I definitely think, ???hey, it could be either one of us.??? And I hope it is one of us too.

Becky Comet:
I agree.
