The Biggest Loser Interviewby Pattye Grippo

This is an interview with Mike Messina on January 11, 2012 about the show The Biggest Loser.

Mike Messina

Question:
We are out here really shaking our heads that it wasn't Kim to go. She lost the least amount of weight and set up the red team for failure. Can you take us through what you think went wrong for you and how did she fly under everyone's radar in that elimination room?

Mike Messina:
That's a good question. I think Kim is a really strong competitor and everyone saw that. And I had a bit of a rough week I wasn't feeling the greatest. I'd over-trained the first week I think, pushed myself more than I should have, harder than I should have and I ended up not feeling well the second week and I got a plantar fasciitis and I was just having a rough go of it. And everybody saw some weakness in me that second week. And it was a way of capitalizing on that focusing on me.

Question:
You're really fighting quite a battle that a lot of people do and that's food and nicotine at the same time. How do you not turn to one to replace the other Mike?

Mike Messina:
I'm staying focused on the positive as much as I can. And food is a funny addiction because you have to eat. Nicotine it's not a survival thing it's more of a nervous habit that you can say no to and survive. But if you say no to food then we all know you die so it's tough. And I would say that food is definitely a harder thing to deal with than nicotine.

Question:
So the acupuncture is helping with the nicotine?

Mike Messina:
The acupuncture is helping; the patch is helping. And the biggest thing that's helping is my daughter. The only thing she asked for her birthday, which is February 1, is that I quit chewing. So that's a pretty good present for her and I'm excited to give it to her.

Question:
It seems like your personal issues and conflicts with others was the focus of last night's episode. What do you think is like one thing that you want people to know about you that maybe got lost in the drama?

Mike Messina:
That I'm a good guy and I want the best for people. And I was just trying to have fun. And I guess I'm a big teddy bear, insecure big teddy bear that gets misunderstood. And I was just doing the best I could considering the pressure and kind of a fish out of water and that's about it. I just did the best that I could with what was going on.

Question:
I think viewers also got the impression that the environment on the ranch this season is really negative. I think Bob even used the word toxic. Is it really that bad? Could you really feel just tension between the teams and the trainers or was that a product of TV do you think?

Mike Messina:
I would say there was a fair amount of attention on the ranch. I was more focused on my own journey they are than everybody else's stuff. And the drama happened and drama was happening around me and I was just trying not to get involved in it because I had my own personal battle with myself going on. So I wasn't really paying attention to everybody else.

Question:
Obviously there was the big twist at the beginning, you got split up from your brother. You didn't seem like you were really in a very good mood during the last chance workout. And it might be silly to ask but did you enjoy the experience at the ranch even though you were separated from your brother?

Mike Messina:
It had its moments. Yes I did enjoy many things, the camaraderie, the anticipation of what was to come as far as your success and the accomplishments that I felt like I was going to make there so I did enjoy it.

Question:
And are you happy enough that you Dolvett as your trainer? Do you think things would have been any different if you'd been training with Bob?

Mike Messina:
Dolvett is a great guy and he's a great trainer. And I was happy with Dolvett.

Question:
You talked last night about how you hoped your time on the show would bring you closer to your brother and then when the teams got split up that hope sort of faded. Can you talk about your relationship with him and how it's changed since doing the show or if it's changed?

Mike Messina:
I'd say that we are definitely closer than we've ever been since the show. I mean, it's - we didn't really have a common thing other than our father as far as a bond because we didn't grow up together. And it was like finally being brothers for the first time in our lives. So the show definitely brought us closer.

Question:
You also said last night that you learn a lot about yourself and your interactions with people on your journey on the Biggest Loser so can you tell us about what you learned?

Mike Messina:
I learned that I guess you don't know someone until you know them. And you can't assume that you do and you can be chummy with people before you actually get to know them.

Question:
Can you talk a little bit about the kind of challenges that you faced since you've been home?

Mike Messina:
The challenges I face being home are the old temptations everywhere and people eating things that I used to eat and not wanting or able to eat those because I have a mission. And that's been tough seeing my addictions in front of me and at any time I could just grab it and eat it but mentally, emotionally and spiritually I know I can't so that's a little rough.

Question:
Have you made any new sort of go to healthy meals and snacks to help you cope with that?

Mike Messina:
Yeah, I eat a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables. I love apples. And apple and a little baby bell of cheese is like an apple pie, it's the most interesting thing I think I've ever eaten. So that's my sinful pleasure.
