The Biggest Loser Interviewby Pattye Grippo

This is an interview with Cate Laughlin on January 15, 2013 about the show The Biggest Loser.

Cate Laughlin

Question:
You went from a meek and mild mouse to a strong competent beautiful swan before our eyes, can you take us through your metamorphosis and who do you see in that mirror now?

Cate Laughlin:
When I look in the mirror I see the Cate that I was always supposed to be. I just see a person that went from having no confidence to all the confidence in the world.

Question:
What did Dolvett bring out in you that you weren't expecting to happen at the ranch?

Cate Laughlin:
Dolvett brought out in me that I was worth it. I never realized how little I felt about myself until I got there and got to working with him.

Question:
One of the things that I found really interesting reading your bio was how quickly you packed on a lot of the weight. I was hoping you could talk to me a little bit about how you got to the size that you did before you go on the ranch.

Cate Laughlin:
I was always a heavy girl. And once I graduated high school I went into college, then I started working at my first job and all of my weight seemed to come on right in those, you know, those short five years. And it was just a combination of bad decisions, eating out all of the time. In the beginning I really wasn't much of a cook.

Question:
And could you talk a little bit about the conversation from Fat Tuesdays to Fit Tuesdays?

Cate Laughlin:
Fat Tuesday was a time when I'd work out with my trainer and then often I would stop at a fast food restaurant after because I had errands to run or things to do after the gym. And I never realized how badly I was sabotaging all the work I was putting in. So Fat Tuesdays has not transformed to Fit Tuesdays. So I bring a protein shake and an apple with me to the gym and that's my thing.

Question:
And did you feel like that you were doing that to intentionally sabatoge or were you not really realizing what you were doing?

Cate Laughlin:
I wasn't realizing, honestly what I was doing. It was all out of ignorance and, you know, you get a hamburger from a fast food restaurant and you take the bun off because in our uneducated minds we think, oh well, at least I'm not eating the bread. We don't realize how bad of a decision that it is.

Question:
When you first arrived at the ranch, how were your expectations different from what the reality was?

Cate Laughlin:
I truly thought that we would have, like filming breaks, changing camera angles. That we'd have some kind of break and that was the biggest misconception that I had because we really did not have any breaks.

Question:
What's your favorite memory from your time when you were there?

Cate Laughlin:
My favorite memory is when Dolvett told me that he was proud of me.

Question:
I think a lot of viewers can completely related to that whole Fat Tuesday thing because I know a lot of people do that, like, right - like the minute after they weigh in they figure they have a whole week to work it off. I don't know if that was figuring into your thinking when you were doing the Fat Tuesday?

Cate Laughlin:
A lot of times it was. I thought, well if I make a bad decision I have the whole week to burn it off and it really is not - when you weigh in, if you weigh in weekly that day of your weigh in is not the end of your week, it's the first day of your next week.

Question:
How did it feel to get on the scale? What was that moment like when you saw it go below 200?

Cate Laughlin:
That moment was just unbelievable when I saw the scale go below 200. I haven't weighed less than 200 pounds - it's gosh, even in high school, I mean, we're going back 10 or 12 years now so it's been a long time and it was just a wonderful dream come true to see that finally happen. I took a picture.

Question:
The red team really seemed to be doing well, working really hard so why do you think quite a few of you didn't quite get the weight loss that you wanted this week?

Cate Laughlin:
I think it was bound to happen. We had two really, really great weeks in a row and I think, you know, your bodies begin to remember what you're doing and we can't pull big numbers all the time basically. It was bound to happen. It certainly was not a reflection of the work we did.

Question:
I wanted to ask you about voting without looking. Can you talk me through that? And also do you have any regrets about that? Are you happy with voting for Jackson in the end?

Cate Laughlin:
I could not look at my teammates and pick which one I thought needed to go home. I knew that all of us in our own way are strong enough to do it at home now but I couldn't pick one and so I just thought I'll let fate do its job. And when it came up Jackson I was extremely sad but I think I would have been sad no matter who popped up. I'm just so glad that it wasn't him.

Question:
You said that you really wanted to run a marathon. I was just wondering, have you got any further with that dream?

Cate Laughlin:
I certainly have. I've been training for my first half marathon so I'm up to seven miles now.

Question:
When is the first one?

Cate Laughlin:
I haven't set a date for it yet.

Question:
I was hoping you give us an update on your current statitstics on how your weight loss journey's going?

Cate Laughlin:
Last time I weighed in which was last Friday I'm at 183.

Question:
What has been the hardest part of this weight loss journey? Like what's been something that has been the hardest and what's actually been a lot easier than you expected it to be since you started the journey?

Cate Laughlin:
One of the hardest parts is now eating enough which is odd because I never dreamed I'd ever have that problem but eating enough. And this is a concept that we should all learn. It's easy to fill 2000 calories with garbage. It's not as easy to fill 1100 calories with good food.

Question:
What are you eating now that's not taking up the calories but you still are getting full and all that?

Cate Laughlin:
I'm eating a lot of green veggies, actually a lot of bright, colorful veggies. And I eat a lot of lean proteins, chicken, fish, sometimes pork tenderloin and occasionally I'll eat a really lean red meat.

Question:
Is there anything that you thought you would never like to eat that you had never tried before or anything like that that now you're just like it's one of my favorite things?

Cate Laughlin:
No but I can tell you that I still do not like spinach and egg whites. Did not like it on the ranch and I still don't like it now.
