The Glee Project Interviewby Pattye Grippo

This is an interview with guest mentor Emily Vasquez on June 27, 2011 about the show The Glee Project.

Emily

Question:
How was your overall experience on that show?

Emily Vasquez:
I had an amazing experience. I can't believe I got to work with behind the scenes real people from Glee. It was amazing. I learned so much. I feel totally blessed by it. And I met wonderful, wonderful people. I'm talking about the contestants. They're all wonderful.

Question:
What is one of the most memorable things that you walk away from the show with?

Emily Vasquez:
I guess the healing. This was a very popular episode for me, so I guess it's my beginning process in making me definitely a stronger person.

Question:
Could you talk about how hard it was to be vulnerable in this week's challenge?

Emily Vasquez:
It was super hard. I was excited at first because I was like, ???Okay. Here's a chance to show a different side,??? but I realized that this is everything to me and I had to be honest. And honestly, I had to be honest for myself and also I feel like young artists, especially females, need to just be careful and be aware. And it was kind of like a warning you know?

I just wanted to let people know everything's not about the glitz and glam. It's hard admitting it to myself and the world, and hard for my family. It hurts a little, but it's the beginning of a healing process. I'm proud of myself for doing it, and I'm so happy that I got the opportunity to show what I got on the show, what it takes.

Question:
Would you have any advice for young girls that are just starting out in the business?

Emily Vasquez:
There are a lot of great people in the business, but there are also a lot of sharks. I would say make sure to talk to whoever you feel is a parent figure. Make sure they know what's going on and talk to someone. You've just got to be very careful. Just be very careful. I would just say have your eyes open the whole time. But for me, everything makes me stronger and that will never happen again.

Question:
You seemed to clash a little bit with Lindsay. Could you talk about your relationship with her?

Emily Vasquez:
I didn't like her honestly in the beginning while I was there. I just felt that way. We're both very strong personalities. So I said things in my confessional, but that's me time, and I pretty much try to just stay away from here. I got along with everybody else. And for me if I don't like someone, I just stay away from the person. But she's harmless. I just stay away from people that get on my nerves, but she's harmless.

Question:
When you left the competition, who did you want to win?

Emily Vasquez:
Honestly, I'm going to be a little biased. I have my best friends there. Like the people I most got along with are Alex and Marissa, and then Matheus and Hannah, so either one of those. They're awesome people and they're my besties there.

Question:
When you did your last chance performance, Ryan Murphy had said to you that he had been wanting to do the song Grenade but couldn't quite figure out how to do it. What were feeling having that high of knowing that he knows how to do it for Glee, but then to see that you weren't called back?

Emily Vasquez:
I couldn't believe he said that. I still can't believe he said that. I honestly just went in there and was like I'm just going to do what got me here and I'm going to perform the song. I'm not just going to sing the song in that I'm telling a story. So I didn't worry about my voice. And him like digging it and I'm so happy. Like wow, that's the best thing I ever could have dreamed was for him to say.

It hurt when I saw the callback list and my name was on the not callback. But I understand where he's coming from and I respect him. I know he wants to see more from Cameron and Damian, and that's awesome. I feel like I did well, and I feel like I did the best that I can do. I went in there fighting and that's all I could do. So I respect his decision, but it hurt a little bit. Not going to lie.

Question:
Do you have anything on the horizon?

Emily Vasquez:
I'm working with this guy. His name is Mack and he produced Damaged from Danity Kane. It was number one on the Pop charts probably a year or so ago. And I'm coming out with my new single. Probably tomorrow it'll be out on iTunes called Slow Motion, and it's a really fun Pop song. And that's the beginning of a whole new direction for me. I want to be a huge Pop star. I want to go the recording artist route. So I'm really excited for the release of my single.

Question:
If you had the chance to go back and do the whole thing all over again, would you do anything differently?

Emily Vasquez:
No. I feel like I did the best that I could do. I guess people have been saying like, ???Oh, but we just started getting to know her.??? But I mean like, I'm a fun person. I have different colors to me, different sides. And you know, I wouldn't take anything back. I think I did a really good job and everything. I don't think I could change anything. Ryan really liked me in the end.

Question:
Did anything happen that surprised you either about yourself or the show in general?

Emily Vasquez:
I never thought the show would go that deep honestly. That was a really crazy deep episode, and I never thought that I would ever admit anything like that. And I just feel like a stronger person because of it. And I'm really happy with everything I've done. Of course it hurt and

Question:
Could talk about your experiencing working with Robert, Zach, and Nikki?

Emily Vasquez:
Wow. It was awesome. Out of all of them I felt the closest with Zach. He's really cool. He's down to earth. He's funny. And I totally got him and he got me. And he was really fun. But you know, he'd like so joke around and stuff, but once it comes down to it, it's like no joke. You'd better like get the steps straight, you know. And Robert's really, really just the sweetest guy ever. And Nikki's great. She's funny. She's a funny one, because she make faces if you do something wrong and it's really funny.

And they're all great. They all give you great constructive criticism and it's for the better. They want you to succeed, unlike some other reality shows. I feel like they don't want you to look like a fool. They really believed in us, and it was an honor working with all of them.

Question:
Were you a fan of Glee before you were on the show?

Emily Vasquez:
Yes. Since the pilot. I fell in love with the first episode. I remember sitting down on my bedroom floor and watching the first episode and cracking up. And I love that it made musical theater cool again, really cool. Not like corny High School Musical cool. Like funny. I was like, ???Oh, I could be one of them. Like those urban Latina chicks from the ghetto or something on that show.??? It'd be awesome to be on that. I never would've thought that like I would ever get to work with those people. I'm so happy about that. So many kids auditioned and I can't believe I made you know, the top 12.
