The Glee Project Interviewby Pattye Grippo

This is an interview with Matheus Fernandes on July 18, 2011 about the show The Glee Project.

Emily

Question:
Is there anything that you were surprised to learn about yourself from doing the show?

Matheus Fernandes:
I was surprised to learn that I had a lot of guts. I mean like with Ryan Murphy wanting me to embrace the whole I guess like sex appeal and the whole like, oh please take your shirt off whatever sort of thing. So I was kind of surprised to see that. But yes, that was the most surprising thing for me.

Question:
What would you say is the most important thing that you've learned from the time you've spent on the show?

Matheus Fernandes:
One thing that I always appreciate about Glee was that we kind of like embraced everybody's uniqueness and differences and kind of highlighted that in a positive light. So I'm kind of thankful. I mean like in a way to Ryan Murphy for because we came in a competition. And I was positive about everything but it still was, I was lacking confidence or whatever. And he noticed it and that what's he was wanting to get out of me. And I kind of came out of my own little shell in a way. And performing and music has always been my dream. So I think that this is a great experience for that and for keeping me pushing forward.

Question:
Right. And my last question is do you have a favorite to win from among the people that are left?

Matheus Fernandes:
I mean I do. I mean like I got really close with all of them. But some really close that I became really fond of were Damian and Sam, Hannah. But I love all of them though.

Question:
Do you feel uncomfortable with Ryan Murphy's request for you to be more sexy or do you think that got in your way?

Matheus Fernandes:
Yes. I did feel uncomfortable with it. But I don't know, it's kind of like that's the kind of character that he envisioned for me if I ever made it into the show. And then again like with me always dreaming about being on Glee and dreaming of music and performing and whatnot. So it's kind of like okay well I guess whatever he wants I guess I'll try to impersonate that character. And but it was kind of a little bit never-wracking for me. And I kind of saw how much guts I have to do that in front of national TV. But I don't know. I wasn't forced into doing it I guess. So but at the same time I did what he wanted\.

Question:
How did you feel when Damian came to your defense when you were talking to Ryan after the last chance performance?

Matheus Fernandes:
You know, Damian was like my little big brother. So like he - defending me like that was I really appreciate it. And I just I didn't want to - I didn't like being put on the spot but when Ryan asked, Ryan was wanting to know which people have been doing whatever, you know. But yes, I mean like he's the creator of Glee so he knows what goes on in the house. I had to be fully honest with him.

Question:
You mentioned Alex there just a minute ago. Did you make up with him at the end?

Matheus Fernandes:
Yes, yes, we made up. Yes we definitely did made up. I love Alex. I love all of the contenders there. Like it was a time of pressure. I mean like it was really intense in the competition and stuff. And I guess sometimes that kind of makes the worse things come out a little bit. But it was an intense week and I don't think anything against him. I'm not saying that I was right either but, you know like it was just an intense week. But we definitely last night like after we just watched a episode and we texted each other we talked about it and we're fine and it's we're cool now.

Question:
Do you think did you expect to be the one that was going home?

Matheus Fernandes:
I wasn't sure but I had to prepare myself to that point in the competition when they do have to eliminate somebody. I've always been so close to many things before it's always been oh you're kind of there but kind of not. So it felt like I had the carpet pulled under me. But it's part of it. And it's this whole industry, I learned that you fall but you have to pick yourself back up and you have to keep going. And but I've said before I've had many nos and many oh, you're too weird to do it you're too different. But finally I got really far into something that I think that this might open up some opportunities later on. I hope so.

Question:
Do you want to carry on in this career?

Matheus Fernandes:
Yes, I definitely want to keep going with music. I love music. I love performing. You know, I just I want to be able to inspire people and touch other people up there and show to them that it doesn't matter if you're different or not. You can still follow your dreams. You can still keep going and you still pursue what you love despite other people trying to bring you down.

Question:
I was wondering what was going through your mind when you started taking your clothes off while you were singing down to Ryan Murphy. Did you feel confident or were you sort of surprised with yourself?

Matheus Fernandes:
I don't even know. I was really nervous but at the same time he's the creator of Glee so if he envisioned that sort of character for me then I was there in a competition to be because I wanted to be on Glee so I was like okay I've got to do it. It was scary. It was scary but I pulled through it. I tried my best not to, I don't know, not to break down over there. But I pulled through it and I just I kept going.

Question:
I was wondering if you feel like you've worked on sort of shutting down when people judge you. You know, Ryan Murphy said that was something that he saw you do. I was wondering if you figured out a way to work on that since your time on the show?

Matheus Fernandes:
I have definitely. Like as far as shutting down like he when he was talking about like vulnerability-wise, it's not something that people are accustomed to talking about. I mean like for me, the whole thing with my height and stuff like that like usually back in the day I used to like not talk about it or whatever now. But now the way that I feel comfortable with it is by talking about it and joking about it and stuff like that. And I think that's a good way, a good outlet of people dealing with whatever they feel insecure about.

Question:
If you could do it all over again would you do anything differently?

Matheus Fernandes:
You know, that's actually a tough question because I'm the type of person that believes that everything sort of happens for a reason the way that it's meant to. And I'm very faithful. I mean I believe in God and whatnot and he always has a path laid out in front of you. If this was not my path that he that he wanted then I think that nothing should be changed. I think that it happened the way that it was probably supposed to happen.

Question:
Could you tell me a little bit about your performing experience before you came on the show?

Matheus Fernandes:
I used to perform in like choir just like with a group. I used to also sing a lot of YouTube videos. And I built up a little fan base there but nothing ever professional. I never went to do gigs like lots of the contenders have done or like I wasn't part of any bands or anything like that.

Question:
Was your high school experience similar to the Glee experience? Can you tell us a little bit about it?

Matheus Fernandes:
Yes it was. I mean like that's one of the reasons why I related so much with Glee to begin with was because those kids, they used music as an outlet for them. I've always been judged by many people in high school you know, like oh look at that kid. He's too weird, he's different. And whenever they'd say that I want to become an actor or a singer or whatever they wouldn't really believe me. So and just seeing Glee and seeing those kids live through the same stuff that inspired me a lot. And that's why I kind of wanted to participate in this project.
