The Glee Project Interviewby Pattye Grippo

This is an interview with Hannah McIalwain on August 8, 2011 about the show The Glee Project.

Hannah McIalwain

Question:
What was your most memorable moment from the time that you've been on the show?

Hannah McIalwain:
There were just so many awesome times that we all had together. But I think for me it was the first time that I sang for Ryan when I got to do the duet with Alex and we sang Valerie. That was just a magical moment for me. And I couldn't believe that Ryan liked me as much as he did. And anytime I get kind of sad about being eliminated I just think about that and how amazing that felt.

Question:
Is there anything that you were surprised to learn about yourself from doing the show?

Hannah McIalwain:
Honestly I kind of surprised myself every day, the fact that I was still there every week and that I was continuing to do well in the competition and just grow as a performer. I was just really impressed with myself. I had never done anything that difficult. You know, a lot of the things we did I had never done before like be on the set or record in the studio. So I think just the whole journey for me, I was pretty surprised that I did as well as I did.

Question:
What's next for you?

Hannah McIalwain:
I'm not really sure yet. I live in LA now so I'm here and I'm ready to grab the city by the horns and I think hopefully I'll be signing with an agency and going on auditions. And I still haven't given up on being on Glee. Maybe Ryan will second think it and give me a call someday so I've got my hopes up for that.

Question:
Ryan did seem to like you a lot on the show. What do you think was the final tipping point for you going home?

Hannah McIalwain:
I think at that point the competition was so intense it came down to who performed the best in front of him. And I think with the song that I was assigned and also with the state of my voice I was having a lot of vocal issues. But I think that in that moment I was just outperformed by Lindsay and Samuel who both did an absolutely amazing job. And like he said, when it came down to it, it was just about talent and I think in that moment their talent shined through a little bit more than mine did.

Question:
Another thing with the judges was that they wished that you could see what they saw in you and you said you're working on it. My question is are you still working on building your confidence and how is that going?

Hannah McIalwain:
I think that's something that I'm always going to be working on. I'm always going to be striving to better myself and to improve on that. But I've just gained so much confidence from the whole experience like it has been an eye opener for me. I feel like I have grown into the person that I have always kind of strived to be and I have gained a lot of confidence. And I think just the more experience I get the more confident I'll be in myself as a performer.

Question:
After your last chance performance you and Ryan talked as you just said about your confidence. I was wondering if a lot of that conversation was edited out for TV because it seems like we're not getting to see everything and if you guys talked about anything else.

Hannah McIalwain:
I think they ended up having to cut it down a little bit but honestly I wish our conversation could have been longer. I feel like I don't know, I feel like with me I'm just so open about everything and I'm just myself 100% of the time which is a good thing but I felt like Ryan kind of felt like he already knew me. So I kind of wish that we would have had a more in-depth conversation honestly. It seemed pretty short to me. But I'm still happy with it. I think just the fact that Ryan liked me and said that I was the show, that meant the world to me. And it's sad to go but I'm still happy with everything.

Question:
I was also wondering if you've talked to Damian since they have been airing all of your confessionals talking about having a crush on him.

Hannah McIalwain:
Yes I have seen Damian since then. We actually got to go the Glee movie premiere the other night, the 3D movie. So he knows and he knew how I felt about him during the show. It was one of those like unspoken but like completely obvious things. You know, you think you're playing it off well and you think you're being coy about it but you're actually totally obvious. But no we're still really good friends. We keep in touch and he's a great person and we still joke around and have a good time.

Question:
You were just talking about getting to go see the Glee Tour 3D movie. I was curious if there have been any rumors about doing a Glee Project tour?

Hannah McIalwain:
I haven't heard anything but I can certainly dream because that would be absolutely amazing. That would be the dream of a lifetime.

Question:
And so now that we're down to just a few contestants, who would you like to see win the Glee Project?

Hannah McIalwain:
Honestly I feel like all of them have worked so hard to be where they're at and I'm a total Gleek and as just an unbiased Gleek I could see any one of them on the next season. So I think it's really anyone's game at this point.
